My name is Anita Grant and I am 51 years old and I'm addicted to Zumba!
I was born and bred in Australia, and have been living here in Sheffield with my English husband since August 2010. Here is my story of how I got to bring Zumba to Thorpe Hesley.
I first attended a Zumba class as part of a charity fundraising day at a gym in Launceston Australia in February of 2010. I knew before the class had even finished that this was something I wanted to keep doing, and something that I wanted to teach to other people; in the hope that they too would feel inspired and exhilarated like I did. There were no training courses in the state of Tasmania at that time; the closest place was a plane trip away to either Melbourne or Sydney. Because of my imminent wedding this wasn't an option at the time, so I decided to bide my time and do my training after I had moved to the UK. In the meantime I continued to participate in classes at a local venue; and also 'shadowed' on stage at my own gym with 2 other Zumba instructors.
On Sunday October 10th I headed off to Bradford feeling very excited that I was finally going to do my training; and after much practice, advertising, searching for a venue and more practice I taught my first class on December 4th in Chapeltown.
I feel very fortunate that I have gotten the opportunity to teach Zumba for a living, and I can honestly say that every day I wake up excited to be teaching a class that day.
Over the course of my life I have taken part in and taught many things; all of which I feel contribute to what I can bring to the participants in my classes. I have played in a percussion band and taught drumming; and also have taught salsa and tango. Since my early 20's I have always belonged to a gym and been a regular member of aerobics classes, and also have been a competitive power lifter at a national level. I feel cardiovascualr fitness and strength training are very important to women, especially as we get older. That old saying of 'if you don't use it you lose it' is so very true.
Zumba is like exercise in disguise! The hour just flies past and the dancing is so much fun you hardly realise you are exercising. Nothing brings me more joy than seeing people in my class laughing as they are dancing along. I try to keep the moves and music interesting with lots of variety, while making the steps easy to learn. There is always a basic step that I add on optional extras to make the move harder for those that wish to 'take it up a level' I always emphasize that we are in a non-competitive environment in my class; and that there are no mistakes - only unexpected solos ( mostly by me I might add )
So I look forward to having you in my class very soon!
