| Methodist School in Panama (Escuela Metodista
de Colón, Panama) |
| When the Reverend Vic Watson arrived in
Panama as a young probationer minister in 1957, one of his church
members asked him why there was not a Methodist school in Colon. Education
was limited to those who could pay, and Vic answered that he did not
know why but recognised the need for more accessible education. He
was concerned about the many children who were denied any real hope
for an improved quality of life and had no security for their future
without an opportunity to gain basic skills. |
| With a grant of £500 from the then Methodist
Missionary Society the Methodist School in Colon was founded by Vic
and opened on 25th May 1959. On the first day there were 7 children
who attended a class in a borrowed room. |
| 1961: The first floor was built, providing
3 classrooms, an office and toilets. |
| 1964: A second floor was added which gave
4 more classrooms. |
| 1994: After a painful wait of 30 years
a new extension was added. |
| The school today is a gleaming beacon
in a sea of desolation. Colon is a very run-down place and all the
houses round the school are in poor repair. Many people are out of
work and the proposed developments of the Panama canal are likely
to increase the gulf between the rich and the poor. |
| This year nearly 300 children are on the
school roll and so are able to stand taller and have hope for a brighter
future because a risk was taken to start a school in the impoverished
city of Colon. No child is turned away because their parents are poor
and scholarship places make this possible. |
| £250 provides a child with free education
for one year. |
| On 25th May 2009 the school celebrated
its 50th anniversary - by the Grace of God a truly miraculous achievement.
